ADHD Inattention Symptoms — the 9 ASRS Items Explained

The inattention domain uses 9 ASRS items scored 0–4 each, for a total of 0–36. It reflects the DSM attention domain: follow-through, organization, remembering, sustained focus, and distractibility.

The items cover unfinished details, disorganization, forgotten appointments, delaying mentally effortful tasks, careless mistakes, difficulty sustaining attention, not taking in what people say, misplacing things, and being easily distracted.

These are descriptive ranges, not clinical cut-offs. The validated reading is the Part A screen. This page is for self-awareness, not a medical diagnosis. ADHD can only be diagnosed by a qualified professional through a fuller evaluation.

FAQ

Does losing focus mean ADHD?

No. Losing focus can come from sleep loss, anxiety, depression, stress, or workload. ADHD becomes more plausible when the pattern began in childhood, appears across settings, and causes real functional impairment.

My inattention total is high — what next?

Compare it with your Part A result, write down concrete situations where it costs you, and consider a professional evaluation if the pattern is long-standing or disruptive.
